Archaeological and Baroque Tour

The tour lasts four/five hours. Private or rented transport  is needed to reach Palazzolo Acreide. The visit is suitable for everybody. Once in town visit is performed in part by walking and in part by transport.

The Archaeological Park

Palazzolo Acreide, a few kilometres far from Siracusa, is one of those places you can’t miss visiting if you are staying in Siracusa surroundings. It is a small town with an important history. Indeed it has been founded by the ancient Greek city of Siracusa in 634 B.C. and here stands an archaeological park rich of Greek evidences. Destinations in the archaeological park are certainly the Greek theatre and the Intagliata and Intagliatella quarries. Remarkable is also the view with the mountain towns of Buccheri and Buscemi in the background. After completing the visit in the archaeological park, by a transport, we arrive to Palazzolo Acreide, locate downhill, which has been rebuilt in his baroque suit after the earthquake of 11th of January 1693.

The old town

The itinerary foresees the visit, into the old town, of the San Sebastiano church, the Town Hall built above the ancient monastery of Benedictines, the longest baroque balcony of the Eastern Sicily, the San Paolo church and the church of Annunziata, for which Antonello da Messina made his “The Annunciazion” painting, today exposed in the Bellomo Gallery in Siracusa.

One place very nice that cannot be missed when visiting Palazzolo Acreide, is certainly the Antonino Uccello House Museum, inaugurated in 1971. Here plenty of things are exposed and they are typical of the Sicilian farm culture. Spoons and cuppini (special spoons for soup) made with olive tree wood or wild pear tree wood. Rustic Pictures made in 1700 and cow sheep and goat collars, all absolutely decorated.

You and you children will appreciate for sure the puppet room, the Sicilian chariot ones and the toy room.

In Palazzolo you can also find bars and pastry shops with definitely finger-licking goods, in addition to several good restaurants proposing delicious meals of local tradition.
